Here are some of the uses of the Jatropha plant:
- The Jatropha plant produces a non-edible vegetable oil that can be used as an alternative to diesel oil. Jatropha oil has similar physicochemical characteristics to diesel and requires only minor modifications to be used in cars.
- It can also be used as an illuminant without the need for refining and burns cleanly without smoke or flame. Due to its high saponification, the oil is used to make soap in some parts of the world.
- The latex of the Jatropha plant contains jatrophine, an alkaloid material that is believed to have anti-cancer properties.
- It is used to treat skin diseases, soreness, rheumatism, and snake bites.
- The tender wing of the plant is used for cleaning, the leaf juice is used for piles, and a dark blue dye is extracted from the bark and used for clothing, fishing nets, and lines.
- The Jatropha oil cake, which is rich in potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, is used as organic manure,
- while the leaves are consumed by silkworms.
